Women have long been leaders in organizing workers and fighting for better conditions. Illinois has a strong tradition of women who took early leadership in the needle trades (clothing manufacturing), teaching and service workers.

In the 1960s women began to enter more traditionally male occupations in heavy industry and construction. At first they were not always welcomed, but today a female electrician, pilot, locomotive engineer or steel worker does not turn heads like it did 40 years ago.
